NPDA 2018 Announcements

We hope you are arriving to Portland safely. A few reminders:

  1. Strike Sheets: Are due tonight, March 22, at 10PM Pacific Time.

  2. Novice Recognition: If you haven’t already and you have any students or teams that qualify for novice recognition as identified in the NPDA tournament operating procedures, please provide that information ASAP. The tournament operating procedures defines novice for the purposes of tournament recognition in the following manner: “no more than one semester of interscholastic high school debate experience AND in their first year of intercollegiate debate competition with a with a year of competition being defined as two tournaments in each of two semesters.” For novice speaker recognition, only the individual debater must meet this criteria; for novice team recognition, both debaters on the team must meet this criteria.

  3. ADA ACCOMMODATIONS: If you haven’t already and anyone associated with your program requires an ADA accommodation, please email that information to npdanationals@gmail.com ASAP so that we can account for it when planning prep rooms and other aspects of the tournament.

  4. E-Ballot Instructions: All judges should have received instructions about the use of e-ballots at this tournament form Konrad Hack. If you have not, please email Konrad at Konrad.hack@cui.edu.

  5. Flex Time: Per a vote of the membership at the fall business meeting, the national tournament will include the addition of flex time between certain speeches. Please review the tournament invitation if you are unfamiliar with flex time. And, even if you are, review the tournament invitation to be sure that you are clear on how it will be utilized at this year’s tournament.

A few announcements before we see you at registration:

  1. Forfeit Rule: Prep time will be 30 minutes and a countdown timer will be available alongside the topic on parlitournament.com. Upon the conclusion of prep, if one or both teams are absent the judge should begin a timer. Teams that arrive late shall have the elapsed time deducted from their first speech. If the time of the first speech is exhausted a forfeit shall be declared in favor of the team present. If both teams are absent, a double loss shall be assigned.

  2. Email Ballot Procedure/Start Ballots: Please review the instructions sent to you by Konrad Hack regarding the balloting procedure for this tournament. After every pairing is posted and before every topic is announced, all judges with a ballot must confirm they have received their ballot for the tournament to move forward. Please help us stay on time by being mindful of this.

  3. Parlitournament.com: Please visit parlitournament.com and review the information available there. This will be the location for pairings, topics, and results, as well as other information throughout the tournament. This page is best viewed using a private window, incognito mode, etc., with your web browser of choice.

  4. Tournament Announcements Google Doc: Please identify the google document on the parlitournament.com page titled “ANNOUNCEMENT DOCUMENT.” THE ONLY LOCATION WHERE OFFICIAL TOURNAMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE RELEASED IS AT THIS LOCATION AND VIA THE EMAIL WE HAVE BEEN USING TO SEND STRIKE FORMS, ETC.

  5. ROLL CALL PROCEDURE: We will be conducting a roll call for the first round of each day. For this round, each school MUST have a representative present. For all other rounds, we will NOT conduct a roll call. HOWEVER, topics will be debated as announced orally and all schools are encouraged to have a representative in attendance.

  6. MEAL TICKETS: Each participant will have a meal ticket for Saturday and Sunday. It will be the same ticket each day. Please make sure you get your ticket and that you do not lose it.

  7. Strike confirmations: Schools will be receiving confirmations of their entered strikes shortly. Or, if there is a problem, you have received an email from Konrad. If neither applies to you by 9pm, please let us know ASAP.

2018 NPDA Championships - Morning Announcements (Day 1)

Please review the announcements from the opening assembly and previous emails, but of particular importance prior to our first round tomorrow please remember:

  1. ROLL CALL PROCEDURE: We will be conducting a roll call for the first round of each day. For this round, each school MUST have a representative present. For all other rounds, we will NOT conduct a roll call. HOWEVER, topics will be debated as announced orally and all schools are encouraged to have a representative in attendance. TL, DR: The choice to not attend topic announce after the first round each day is at your own risk.

  2. FLEX TIME: Per a vote of the membership at the fall business meeting, the national tournament will include the addition of flex time between certain speeches. Please review the tournament invitation if you are unfamiliar with flex time. And, even if you are, review the tournament invitation to be sure that you are clear on how it will be utilized at this year’s tournament.
